There are a number of short walks from Dacre House which take in various sections of Hadrian’s Wall in and around Gilsland.
One of the best preserved milecastle along the wall, Milecastle 48 can be found at Poltross Burn on the southern outskirts of the village. Other well-preserved sections of the wall and prominent landmarks such as Turrets 48a and 48b, the remains of the Old Roman Bridge Abutment across the River Irthing and Harrows Scar Milecastle 49 can be found on the section of the Hadrian’s Wall path travelling west to Birdoswald Roman Fort as leave the village at Willowford Farm.
The full walk from Dacre House to Birdoswald Roman Fort will take approximately 30 minutes.
