Dacre House is a luxury bed & breakfast located in the village of Gilsland right on the Northumberland / Cumbria border.

Gilsland is nestled conveniently on the Hadrian’s Wall Path and Cycle Route 72, between Birdoswald and Carvoran Roman Forts, with the Pennine Way nearby.

Our location is ideal for exploring the locale: Undiscovered and Wild Northumberland, Cumbria, and the Lake District, the Scottish Borderlands, the Pennines AONB, North East Coast and Castles as well as the vibrant cities of Carlisle and Newcastle.

We are centrally placed within the village and are very close to the local tearoom House of Meg’s, The Bridge Inn and The Samson Inn Community Pub.

Evening meals

The Samson Inn Community Pub provides evening meals and is a short stroll away. During the winter months the pub may reduce its opening hours, then Dacre House can provide evening meals on request for our guests

Best place to stay along Hadrian's Wall. We stayed at Dacre House for one night with a group of friends while hiking along Hadrian's Wall. Dacre House was the absolute highlight of all our accommodations. Clare is a wonderful host, the rooms are large and nicely furnished, the beds are very comfortable, the bathrooms are perfect, and there is a room where you can sit together in the evening. Clare prepares a very delicious breakfast and is also very helpful with everything else. If we ever come back to the area, we will definitely stay there again. Thanks again and all the best, Ulrich

Amazing!! Good value, Hadrian's Wall – – with the amazing CLARE! OPEN nearly year round, with four available guest rooms at this time, this is a delightful respite from being on the Roman frontier and touring all those forts and walking along the wall! Out here in this extremely low population rural area, hostess CLARE and this wonderful c . 1860 house that she and her husband restored can be your everything, including any meals that you don't have at local eateries, such as House of Meg, green head COFFEE SHOP, Samson's pub or the café at the Roman Army Museum.

A wonderful place to stay Dacre House is an outstanding place to stay. Friendly welcome from Clare, a beautiful old property, immaculately decorated, well equipped rooms with everything you might need. A large lounge with an 'honesty' bar. Highly recommended.

One of our favourite places to stay This was our second visit to Dacre house which is just a short distance from Hadrians Wall. It is as fantastic as ever, with a large, comfortable room and a wonderful breakfast to help us on our way. Clare and her team were welcoming and friendly and pre booked an evening meal at the local pub for us which was just what we needed after a long drive. We will certainly be back.

This stay was absolute Perfection! The place is beautiful and the decor is stunning. It has such a cozy sitting space with drinks/snacks where we were able to gather and meet other guests (who were also hiking the Hadrian's Wall Path). Hosts were some of the kindest people, breakfast was delicious, the bed was very cozy, and the showers were excellent. If you're looking at this review and stay somewhere else, you're making the wrong choice.

Dacre House is an exceptional guest house more like a small boutique Hotel. The rooms are beautifully styled and decorated. Claire made our stay really comfortable and made communication/booking easy. The breakfast menu was varied and the food was of high quality. You can view the kitchen from the dining room which are both spotlessly clean. There is an honesty bar for evening drinks. Packed lunches are available. There is a strong focus on artisanal local products and recyclable packaging/environmentally friendly products. Your dogs will also be made very comfortable too!

This was the most delightful and well appointed B&Bon our trip. The hosts were very kind and attentive to everything we could have needed. They had an honesty bar, which was very welcoming. The food was also the best that we have had. The rooms were wonderful. The rooms we stayed in prior to this one did not have a little lounge area for guests and this one had a lovely one. We were traveling as a small group and it was really lacking in the places that did not have a gathering spot. Thank you, Claire for the wonderful greeting and service you provide provided.
